Once you have downloaded the EndNote installation file from the Library EndNote Guide, you need to extract the file and then install it:
- Close any Microsoft Office programs to proceed i.e., Word, Outlook, PowerPoint.
- Open This PC > Click Downloads
- Double click the CDU_EndNote_Windows.exe file to run and install EndNote to your C Drive.
- Open This PC > Select Windows(C:) > Program Files (x86) > EndNote 21 > and then the blue EndNote.exe icon.
- Follow the steps to complete the installation. EndNote 21 for is ready for use.
Error message: Installation Wizard cannot continue because Microsoft Office products are running.
- Press CTRL + ALT + Delete and choose Task Manager.
- Go to the Processes tab
- Scroll down to Background Processes
- Locate any programs running that have Microsoft Office in the title (particularly Word, PowerPoint and Outlook programs)
- Highlight the program and choose the End Task button at the bottom.
- Retry the EndNote installation process.
Security settings preventing download:
The security settings on a Windows PC may prevent unknown apps from being downloaded on to your computer. To allow the download, you may need to temporarily change your settings:
- Search for Windows Security in the Start menu (Windows 10) or select Settings, then Privacy & Security and Windows Security (Windows 11)
- Select App & Browser Control and click on the Reputation-based protection settings link.
- Under Potentially unwanted app blocking untick Block downloads (Windows 10) or turn off SmartScreen and Potentially unwanted app blocking (Windows 11)
- Download EndNote then immediately restore the security settings.
