Ebook Central includes a number of features and tools for customising the display and enhancing your reading experience. Proquest Ebook Central Help page contains full guidance.

Enabling Accessibility Mode

Although Ebook Central does not have a built-in text-to-speech reader, you can switch to accessibility mode to use the software easily with extensions and other assistive software.

  1. Click Profile in the top banner
  2. Under the section Accessibility Settings, use the radio buttons to select text only mode
  3. Check the box to agree to ProQuest's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service
  4. Save changes.
  5. Use the Read Online button to open the book in the ebook reader. The text will display as plain text with no image layer. You can now use this text view with text-to-speech applications such as Read&Write (see below).
  6. Please note that highlighters and notes cannot be used in text-only mode.

Read & Write

All CDU staff and students have free access to a whole suite of functions in Read & Write, including text-to-speech, speech-to-text, website simplification, and much more. Please head to Read & Write to learn more about the functions and how to utilise the program. From there, you can head to this page to download the Read and Write browser or desktop extension. Simply log in with your CDU email and password, and benefit from the amazing functions available.

Please contact Access and Inclusion for more information about reasonable adjustments to allow equal access and participation in university life.
