What’s changed in eBook Central?

Starting May 2025, eBook Central has updated its system to make EPUB the default format for online reading instead of PDF. This change, part of the new "EPUB Preferred" initiative, is designed to:

  • Improve accessibility for all users, especially those using screen readers and other assistive technologies
  • Enhance compatibility across a wider range of devices
  • Align with global accessibility standards

How does this affect page numbers in my reading lists?

Because EPUB files are reflowable, they adjust dynamically to the screen size and reader settings, meaning page numbers can vary between users and devices.

This could cause confusion if your reading list refers to specific page numbers from the old PDF view.

We recommend that lecturers avoid citing page numbers in reading lists and instead, refer to chapters or section headings for a more consistent experience for all students. For example,

Instead of:
“Read pages 41–45 of Chapter 2”
Try:
“Read Chapter 2: ‘The Rise of Renewable Energy’ – from the section on Solar Power to the end of the chapter.”

Can I or my students switch back to the PDF format?

Yes! You can switch between EPUB and PDF formats if both are available for a title.

In the EPUB reader (new default), click the book icon in the top toolbar to open the book details panel. Then click “Switch to PDF” – it appears next to the Download button, under the book cover.

In the PDF reader, click the book icon on the left-hand side to open the book details panel. Then click “Switch to EPUB” – located above the Full Download button, under the book cover.

This allows readers to choose the format that best fits their preferences or needs.
