Copyright is a protection that automatically gives creators, such as students, researchers, and teachers, control over how their original work is used. If you make something original, you get the right to decide who can copy, share, sell, or adapt it. Copyright also controls how you can use material in your assignments, research and teaching material legally and ethically.

Copyright applies to a wide range of material commonly used in research, including text, images, tables, photographs, and other creative works. In most cases, copyright is owned by the creator or publisher; however, rights may also be licensed or assigned. Depending on the nature of use, additional permission may be required before material can be shared, published, or made openly available.

You will need to understand copyright so you can use information in accordance with the copyright rules. For more information about what copyright is, see the Copyright Agency About Copyright page.
