When using generative AI (GenAI), it’s important to be careful with copyrighted and licensed material.

Key points:

  • Avoid uploading copyrighted material
Do not upload journal articles, book chapters, or other library resources into GenAI tools unless you are sure it is allowed. Many library licences prohibit this.

  • Check the terms of the AI tool
Some GenAI tools may store or reuse what you upload. This can affect copyright and confidentiality.

  • Your own work
You can generally use your own work, but check if you have assigned copyright to a publisher before reusing it.

  • Use approved tools where possible
CDU Library provides AI tools, such as Research Assistant, that allow limited, compliant use of content.

  • When in doubt
Chat to us in the library, see the Using AI tools at university for more information on AI and its responsible use. You can also book an appointment with an Academic Integrity/GenAI Peer Advisor.
