Probably yes, depending on what you signed when you published. When you publish in a subscription-based journal, you typically sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement that passes copyright to the publisher. This means that even though you wrote the article, you may not have the right to reproduce it in full in your thesis without the publisher's permission.

What you can include depends on:

  • the terms of your specific publishing agreement;
  • the publisher's self-archiving and Green Open Access (OA) policy;
  • which version you want to include (preprint, accepted manuscript, or published version.

If your article was published Open Access under a Creative Commons licence, you can generally include it in your thesis under the terms of that licence.

If you are unsure about your rights under a specific agreement, contact the CDU Library Copyright Officer.
