RightsLink is an automated permission-granting service used by many major academic publishers. It allows you to request a licence to reproduce copyright material without needing to contact the publisher directly.

To use RightsLink:

  • Go to the article page on the publisher's website.
  • Look for a link labelled 'Request Permission', 'Get rights and content', 'Reprints and permissions', or similar;
  • This will take you to the RightsLink system, where you describe your intended use and receive a licence (sometimes free, sometimes for a fee).

Not all publishers use RightsLink. If you cannot find a permissions link or if the publisher is not in the RightsLink system, you will need to write directly to the publisher or copyright holder. Use the CDU sample permission letter template as a guide.
