Maps are protected as artistic works under the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth). Before reproducing a map, check:
- whether copyright has expired (check the publication date and author/creator details);
- whether the map carries an open licence (e.g. Creative Commons);
- whether it is a government-produced map; some government maps are openly licensed, but check carefully for terms of use;
If none of these apply, you will need to request permission from the copyright holder to reuse the map.
For help identifying the rights holder and approaching the request, see CDU Sample Permission Letter & Guide.
